Carta Marina, 1539
This 1539 Carta Marina by Olaus Magnus (1490-1557) is the earliest detailed map of the Nordic countries. The inscription reads: A Marine map and Description of the Northern Lands and of their Marvels, most carefully drawn up at Venice in the year 1539 through the generous assistance of the Most Honourable Lord Hieronymo Quirino.
The Old Salt Route, Lüneburg to Lübeck
The traditional route from Lüneberg, which mined salt, to Lübeck, the central point for much of the Baltic trade, via (from 1398) the Stecknitz Canal, which was replaced in 1900 by the Elbe-Lübeck Canal.
